Super Bowl HD
February 4th, 2007
I notice Cox Cable here in Rhode Island has decided to give us the local CBS HD transmission (WPRI-DT) on Channel 701, just in time for the Super Bowl. I wonder if we’ll get to keep it, or whether this is a one day thing…
UPDATE: They removed CBS HD at the end of the game. I just sent a message to Cox asking why we’re not allowed to get CBS and FOX on the HD lineup.

[…] When news broke this morning that Wal-Mart was entering this market, I thought it could be pretty cool. I went to their website and checked the FAQ. The first thing my eyes caught was the compatibility with Windows Media Extender. But then I read “Technical Specification: 640 X 480 maximum resolution” and it all fell apart for me; that’s even lower resolution than a DVD. So until Wal-Mart catches up with the movies I can get on Xbox Live Marketplace (up to 720p and higher in some cases) and Apple TV (720p max), I can’t see why I’d want to buy movies that will look horrible on my TV. There’s been a lot of skepticism about the prospects of video downloads, and I think it’s all justified until you start talking about HD. Given the limited line-up of HD channels in my area, I am very hungry for high-def content. It’s a big opportunity for whoever can sign up lots of studios. […]

[…] As I posted on Monday, I sent an email to Cox asking them why we aren’t able to receive CBS and FOX on the HD lineup… Here’s their response: We have received your recent e-mail, inquiring why is CBS and Fox in High Definition, is not available on our lineup. Please be advised, the local affiliates of these stations are owned by LIN Broadcasting. We were able to have a one-day agreement to receive CBSHD on 2/4/07, to broadcast the Super Bowl in High Definition. At this time, Cox is actively negotiating with LIN to gain carriage of the high definition signals, for these channels and will continue to do so until a long-term agreement has been reached. Unfortunately, we do not have launch dates or any specifics available to us, at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience that you have experienced, due to this delay. […]
